Kitsilano
It's hard to believe that at the turn of the 19th century Kitsilano was no more than wild forest. In those days Kits beach was the favourite camping ground for west-end residents and large-scale development in the area did not start until after the Second World War. The Kitsilano neighbourhood is defined by the area west of Burrard Street to Alma Street and from the Waterfront to 16th Avenue. Today many of the beautiful old residences are still standing and some of the larger ones have been converted over the years into multiple family dwellings (condos). In the mid to late 1960s, young people from all across the country discovered the charm of the area around 4th Avenue. To this day it has retained a very unique flavour, appealing to people of all ages.
Kitsilano is home to the Vancouver Maritime Museum, and H.R. MacMillan Space Centre . Every spring Vanier Park hosts the Children's Festival, offering lots of fun for kids and parents alike. Vanier Park is also a favourite spot for young and old to try their hand at flying a kite. And of course it is in Vanier Park where every June you can see the big tents being set up for Vancouver's annual Shakespearean festival "Bard on the Beach". After a long absence the popular Greek Day on Broadway has returned to Kitsilano
The proximity to downtown, the beach and Granville Island Market, as well as the variety in shopping along 4th Ave, the European style bistros, side walk cafes and numerous ethnic restaurants, all contribute to make Kits a favourite place to live. copyright Helgard Verge |
